As a business start-up founder, I feel like I have a hundred year's work to do in about a fortnight. Every time I research something, I come up with new ideas and more items for the to do list. I can flit from totally fascinated to terrified in moments, as I realise how much more work I have to do and then I have to ground myself with lots of head down, nose to the computer work.
Today has been a good example of the varied experiences that are my current business life. First thing this morning I was worrying about being behind schedule, although I am just about hanging in there, but I was definitely feeling a bit wobbly about how much I had to do. I considered abandoning my visit to a local Expo that I had pencilled in, so that I could tackle the phoenix like to do list.
However, the Expo was 15 minutes away so I went. I was nervous. I wandered among the stands wondering how these proficient professionals could take me seriously with my brand new business with only 1 client. Thankfully, I managed to talk intelligently about my business, my background and training and people took me seriously.
I swapped details with a handful of very lovely people, learnt something new from a fellow social media business owner and came out feeling really positive about the outlook for my business. Thank you everyone who chatted to me!
I got back to my desk an hour and a half later and connected with everyone I'd met via social media, wrote an email to my client and dashed off to catch up with a couple of wonderful friends who both have an appreciation of the work required to create a fully-fledged business and their understanding affirmed that the slog is required but worth it.
I made some good contacts during the day, learnt some useful tips and kept my business going. The day also reinforced my thoughts on how to deal with overwhelm and how to keep a positive mental attitude as a new business owner by...
a. Keep making the to do lists, ruthlessly identifying the most important tasks and either ditching or outsourcing parts which can’t wait.
b. Keep talking to other people, because they all have different perspectives, tips and ideas about things which help inform what I’m doing. Chatting things through can be very uplifting and motivational and if I can tie it in with a dog walk then so much the better!
c. Acknowledge what I’ve achieved, because it is all progressing my business and I like to celebrate every win no matter how tiny!
One day, being able to call my business “established” will be great, but for now I’m enjoying every aspect of making it take flight.
